Do I Have To Take A Test To Become A Taxi Driver?

The simple answer is 'Yes' you do need to take A test to become A taxi driver. Which test you'll need to take will depend on what taxi you plan on driving.

When choosing the correct test to book you have two options.

  1. Hackney carriage: Hackney drivers can do pre-booked jobs, contract work (eg School run contract) and be flagged down by customers and pick up customers waiting at taxi ranks.
  2. Private hire: Private hire drivers can only do pre-booked work and this work must be issued through A licenced taxi firm (ie Door 2 Door Taxis)

If you would like to become A Hackney Carriage driver you will need to book the Council test. If you would like to be A private Hire driver you will need to take the DVLA test. With both licences, you still need to take the same theory test.

Step 1: Where And How To Apply For Your Taxi Test?

To apply for a hackney or private hire taxi licence the first step is to contact Chesterfield borough council and make the application.

What information will I need to make the application?

At this point the council will need just basic personal information so they can do a:

  • DBS check (criminal record check)
  • DVLA check (driving history check)

You can also book your tests at this point. You have the option of 3 ways to contact the council.

Like I mentioned above, which test you take will depend on what taxi you plan to drive. Below I will give A brief explanation of each test.

What does a taxi test involve?

Hackney Council Test

The driving test will last for about 45 mins. As an example, you would pick the Tester up at the town hall in Chesterfield town centre and in the test, you will be asked to drive on the shortest route to 4 or 5 well know chesterfield landmarks

Examples could be:

  1. Drive from Chesterfield town hall to the Rolay hospital at Calow.
  2. Drive from Royal hospital to Proact Stadium
  3. Drive from the Proact to Morrisons in Brampton
  4. Drive from Morrisons to Chesterfield train station.

Private Hire: DVLA Test

The Private hire test is very similar to the standard driving test most of us have taken before. The instructor is looking at your lane positioning, that you are using your mirrors correctly and driving at the correct speed etc.

Step 2: Theory Test

The theory test can be booked at the same time as the driving test and can be taken before or after the driving test.

Where to go for the theory test

As of the time of writing the test is taken in Chesterfield town hall.

How many questions are on the taxi test?

The taxi theory test has 60 multiple-choice questions. There are 4 possible answers per question. Only one is correct.  You need to get a minimum of 48 correct to pass. The test questions are one 4 main topics:

  • Section one - Road Procedure and Responsibilities, Ecosafe Driving and The Environment
  • Section two- Traffic Signs and Signal, Vulnerable Road Users and Mechanical Knowledge
  • Section  three - Health and Safety, Legal Responsibilities and Safe Loading of the Vehicle
  • Section four - Customer Care, Carriage of Vulnerable Passengers and Passenger Comfort and Safety

There are numerous websites online that have some.
